Candombe in Argentina

Candombe in Argentina

Not many people talk about Candombe in relation to Argentina or Afro-Argentines nowadays, but the truth is that Candombe music had similar developments in Argentina as in Uruguay. In this section we would like to show you what led to the invisibility of the Afro-Argentine cultural form of Candombe and highlight some of the similarities or differences to Uruguay. It is important to notice beforehand that Candombe as an Afro-descendant cultural form has not been very present in Argentine culture in the past, however there has been a resurgence in the past years. It must be mentioned that there are very few scholars that have researched Afro-Argentine Candombe and its historical role recently.

George Reid Andrews' The Afro-Argentines of Buenos Aires – 1800-1900 from 1980 remains one of the most important sources on the cultural impact of Afro-Argentines on PorteƱo society. The Argentine scholar Alejandro Frigerio has done more recent research in the past twenty years. However, all sources in regard to Afro-Argentine Candombe must be approached very critically. Frigerio has determined that many scholars of Afro-Argentine culture have used descriptions of Afro-Uruguayan Candombe without acknowledging this ā€œin order to portray what the Argentine one was or could have been likeā€ (Frigerio, ā€œBlacks in Argentinaā€ 10). For illustrations, movies, and more, Afro-Uruguayan comparsas, rhythms, musicians have been and are being used to highlight the nation's black heritage. Additionally, there has been almost no information on the characteristics of the old Afro-Argentine Candombe. We have tried to find reliable information to the best of our abilities, and by that mark differences to Candombe in Montevideo. (For further information on Afro-Uruguayan Candombe, please go to ā€œCandombe in Uruguayā€)
